I know this isn't a widely held view, but I have never believed Kim Reynolds is seriously interested in becoming the VP. I think she enjoys the national attention and being mentioned as a possible candidate, but her sole ambition is to be governor for life.
thanks Barry. I will disagree on points, but appreciate your raising the issue.
1. “does nothing to pick up any electoral votes Republicans won’t likely win in 2024 anyway. . Disagree.. Republicans will continue to use Iowa as an example that D’s do not care about rural Iowa, as seen with the removal of D caucuses. Until the D’s figure out belatedly how to respond, R’s will continue to use Iowa as proof.
2. True “Few electoral votes”, but disproportionate a attention from national media.
3. “Reynold’s would not significantly expand the party’s geographic appeal”. Disagree. Until the Electoral College is changed and with the two Senators/state power we have, rural, smaller states have disproportionate representation. And R’s don’t care about urban areas. Note Iowa bills which adversely impact more urban areas of Iowa.
4. “Reynolds would not expand the party’s appeal ideologically. “Nationally, governors like Reynolds, Abbott, De Santis and others are needed for the core. Until D’s come up with a game plan on COVID, trans, etc. having Reynolds on the ticket gives them a reason to talk about overreaching of COVID response, moral imperative to remove trans from society, etc. “Usually, people who become party leaders and win a place on the national ticket do so by actually leading”. Originality places second to the ability to take credit, as trump and others have done.
For the sake of our state, Governor Reynold’s time and effort would have been better spent working to become a better Governor for all of Iowa. She could actually have been a heroine by taking a strong position of Jan. 6 or on moderating extreme bills on book banning and anti trans. She chose not to.
So far, she knows what works politically for her..and the R leadership has taken notice. The important role of Iowa D’s is to create strategies and messages to combat her governance built on intolerance and fear of the others.
If for some reason Sen. Grassley finds he is unable to complete his current term and must step down, Gov. Reynolds will resign, Lt. Gov Gregg will accede to the governorship and appoint her to the Senate. Gov. Gregg will not stand for election and Speaker Grassley will seek the governorship.
Sad, but entirely possible.
